WEATHER ALERT: Storm headed toward Sumter prompts Tornado, Severe Thunderstorm Warning

A heavy thunderstorm system generating tornado activity was spotted in St. Matthews late Monday afternoon, heading toward Sumter County.

The National Weather Service said the tornado was spotted on radar around 5:16 p.m.,  issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the area in effect until 5:45 p.m., and is strongly suggesting those in the path of the storm, which is generating wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour and quarter-sized hail, to take cover immediately.

According to the NWS, Sumter County also remains under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Monday., meaning conditions capable of generating a tornado are expected to remain in the area until that time.
