A series of overnight drive-by shootings in the South Sumter area left one man injured and investigators for both the Sumter Police Department and Sumter County Sheriff’s Office looking for answers.
According to reports from the sheriff’s office, the first incident occurred in the 200 block of Acres Circle, where, around 11 p.m. Friday, a 21-year-old male was allegedly shot in the leg by passengers of a white Dodge Charger driving by the home. The victim was transported to Palmetto Health Tuomey for treatment to non-life threatening injuries.
While at the hospital, the victim provided deputies with a description of the car and possible suspects. Ken Bell, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said deputies investigating the shooting spoke with witnesses providing alibis for the suspect’s whereabouts.
Approximately four hours later, however, around 2:45 a.m. Saturday, officers with the Sumter Police Department were responding to two residences in the South Sumter area, less than three miles away from the initial incident, reporting drive-by shootings of their own.
Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the city police department, said both homes – one in the 500 block of Lafayette Drive and the other on the 500 block of Silver Street – were occupied at the time, but that no one was injured in either incident. McGirt added it remains unclear at this time who fired the shots or their motive.
Local law enforcement is attempting to determine whether the altercations were linked. As of Saturday afternoon, no arrests have been made in any of these incidents.
Anyone with any information into any of these shooting incidents is asked to call either the Sumter Police Department at (803) 436-2700, the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office at (803) 436-2000, or Crime Stoppers at (803) 436-2718.
