Graham Osteen, the Editor-At-Large for the Sumter Item, and part owner of the local newspaper and several other newspapers in key battleground states, has endorsed the Presidential candidacy of Ohio governor John Kasich.
Posting on his Twitter account, as well as on his personal website, Osteen declared, “Kasich is my choice for Prez,” as well as links to the recent endorsement of Kasich by the New York Times.
With less than two weeks before the South Carolina GOP primary, and three weeks until the Democratic primary, the Sumter Item as a newspaper has not made an official public endorsement in the race. This past week, however, the local newspaper published a tongue-in-cheek column penned by Osteen regarding the candidate’s upcoming visit to Sumter, which included photoshopped pictures of Osteen with Trump-like hair. Osteen’s personal website also provides links to several articles that have been highly critical of the Republican frontrunner, as well as Texas senator Ted Cruz.
While performing poorly in the Iowa caucuses, Kasich is expected to have a strong performance in the New Hampshire primary, and has some support in the Sumter area. The Ohio governor finished fourth in a recent straw poll conducted by the Sumter GOP, behind Cruz, Trump and Dr. Ben Carson.
In addition to the Sumter Item, Osteen Publishing also owns two newspapers Florida – Clay Today in Jacksonville; Ponte Vedra Recorder, in Ponte Verda – as well as newspapers in New Mexico and Alabama.
None of the other properties of Osteen Publishing have made public endorsements in the race at this point.
