A 20-year-old Sumter man is dead and his teen-aged girlfriend has been charged with murder after his stabbing death Friday morning.
Anastasia Brejean Singleton, 19, of Rolling Creek Drive in Sumter was arrested by the Sumter Police Department shortly after the incident around 8 a.m., said Tonyia McGirt, public information officer for the local law enforcement agency.
The victim, 20-year-old Desjuan Martinez Lemon, who lived with Singleton, was transported by Sumter County Emergency Medical Services to Palmetto Health Tuomey, where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy has been set for Sunday.
McGirt said witnesses at the home saw the two arguing before the stabbing took place, but that an investigation into the incident will continue. Authorities have not said whether they believe anyone witnessed the actual attack, but have said they believe the argument between the suspect and the victim is what led to the violent attack.
Singleton was the one that reported the incident to authorities, McGirt said, adding that investigators believe this is an isolated incident.
The suspect will remain in custody at the Sumter-Lee Regional Detention Center where she will await legal hearings. Because of the severity of her charge, Singleton must wait until a hearing before a circuit court judge can be scheduled before she can have a bond hearing.
