UPDATE: Prolific movie actor Danny Glover is expected to join Sanders at the Presidential candidate’s campaign stop Monday morning. Glover, who recently endorsed Sanders, has been joining the Vermont senator at campaign stops in South Carolina in recent days.
ORIGINAL POST: Sumter will get one more chance to feel the Bern as Vermont senator Bernie Sanders will return to the Gamecock City early Monday morning as part of his bid for the White House.
Sanders, who already visited Sumter last year during the beginning stages of his campaign, will be on hand at Serendipity Café & Catering at 118 South Main St. at 9 a.m. Monday, Feb. 22. Doors open for the free event at 8:30 a.m.
His opponent for the Democratic Party nomination, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, also plans to visit Sumter in the coming week, stopping by Morris College this Wednesday. Details for that event can be found here.
While the Democratic race stated with six candidates, the field quickly paired down to Clinton and Sanders, and the two have found themselves in a surprisingly close race. While Clinton holds small victories in Iowa and New Hampshire, Sanders defeated the front-runner convincingly in New Hampshire. Recent polls have shown Clinton might have her first comfortable victory in South Carolina, but the recent plans by both campaigns to visit Sumter – Sanders’ announcement didn’t come until the night before his event- indicates both campaigns are continuing to compete for every vote in the week leading up to the primary.
South Carolina Democrats head to the polls Saturday for the last primary before the so-called Super Tuesday races throughout the nation the following week.
